Hurricane's over folks, keep moving, nothing to see here
I was in line at the Sam's this morning. It was two deep to check out. Less busy than a typical Saturday.
I had some stuff for the studio in the basket. We were open yesterday and today, business was good. People without A/C are happy to partake in ours and we are happy to have them.
The guy behind me in line says, "Windex? That's a weird thing to buy in the middle of a hurricane."
I don't like strangers talking to me so I said the first thing I thought, "Hurricane's over."
Turns out the guy was from Seabrook and it wasn't over for him. I wished him luck.
There's a few things that need fixing, no doubt. Electricity, gasoline, and stoplights.
This is Houston, though. We don't stand around waiting for someone to take care of us. We open for business.
The nail place near us is open. Guys have shown up in the neighborhood and are hauling away brush. The sandwich shop near us has made a killing. Odd considering that everyone has been eating sandwiches for days.
Where does the mayor get the authority to declare a curfew? I went looking for this curfew declaration in writing on his web site. Nothing there. I searched the city charter, nothing.
He was saying on the radio that there were some exceptions to the curfew, and seeing as I am an early riser, I'd like to know if I can be on the road.
Or maybe the mayor has decided that he can rule by decree.

This has got to be a good Republican site to get linked off Burnt Orange Report!
I work for Senator Cornyn and was wondering if someone could e-mail me at vincent@johncornyn.com I want to invite you all to join our blogger coalition.
Thanks

I'm glad to hear things are getting back to normal for you, Rob. Same here. But the whole experience has me wondering about the whole poliblogging wankerfest (as opposed to more productive uses of time).... Once things calm down a bit, I hope you'll have time for a brew (or many) at the Ice House. We're overdue!

Vincent,
Thanks for the comment and for reading. I helped a committee trying to draft Ron Paul to run for Senator in the 2002 primary. After Sen. Cornyn announced I intensified my efforts. So, although I don't have anything particularly against Sen. Cornyn, I don't have any particular affection for him either. So, thanks but no thanks on the coalition.
Besides, I'm not sure I would want to be any part of a coalition that invited the likes of me :)

The Kevster,
Yes, I have managed to drive to Sugar Land and back today and every streetlight was working! We are very lucky on the west side and me in particular, very lucky.
I'm up for a beer anytime.
I'm spending so much time on the computer for work I've lost a lot of interest in spending "fun" time on it. So, the blogging diminishes more and more...

Oh, and someone on KSEV asked my question about curfew and Dan Patrick kind of bungled the answer but I was able to figure it out.
The caller asked, like I, where in the City Charter is this emergency power granted?
Well, it isn't in the City Charter. It's in the state statutes. The governor's disaster declaration authorizes control over the movement of people in the disaster areas.

Oh yeah, and if they don't repeal the curfew by Monday morning, I'm starting to break it.
